One of the world's rarest birth defects, caused when a conjoined twin fails to develop in the womb. Images below show the head of an undeveloped twin attached to the skull, facing upward. The undeveloped appendage grew from the top of the skull and had fully separate brain, eyes, ears, and lips. The "second head" threatened this otherwise healthy female infant's brain development and was discovered to be growing at a faster rate than the lower head. Sadly, the infant later died in a risky surgery to remove the undeveloped portion.
